Over 2,000 years ago, the Greek physcian Parmenides said, “Give me a chance to create fever and I will cure any disease.” Well, it goes without saying that Parmenides was on to something. Overheating therapies have been used and celebrated for much of human history. The Romans used baths, the Native Americans used sweat lodges and today, many people are willing to pay through the teeth to have access to a sauna or steamroom, and with good reason raising the body’s temperature slightly, speeding up the body’s metabolism, and inhibiting the growth of invading organisms. Once a fever is established, the body will literally burn viruses away with its heat. Sweating, a convenient byproduct of a fever, is also one of the most effective (and cheapest) ways to rid the body of toxins. Now, if you can’t abide sweating with strangers and a personal sauna isn’t something you have lying around, take heart, because with a few odds and ends from your kitchen and local health food store, you can indulge in a little overheating therapy in the comfort of your own home.

Detox baths are an easy and effective way to eliminate toxins from the liver, kidneys and thyroid. A basic detox bath consists of Epsom Salts, hot water (as hot as you can stand), baking soda and a few shavings of ginger. Epsom salts and baking soda are both sulfates. When sulfates are absorbed through the skin they go to work extracting toxins from the body’s cells through reverse osmosis. Ginger is a smart addition, because it is a natural decongestant (perfect for a mean case of the sniffles), anti-inflammatory and it encourages sweating.

To prep for a detox bath, brush your skin with a vegetable brush or a loofah. Work from the centre of your body, brushing away from the heart. After brushing, massage your body with sesame oil, or your favourite natural massage oil, for about 5 minutes. When it’s bath time, simply fill the tub with hot water. Once it’s halfway full, sprinkle your chosen ingredients (recipes below) in the water and give it a couple good swishes. When the tub is full, slip into the water and try immerse as much of your body as possible. Sit for at least 20 minutes or for as long as 45 minutes. If this is your first detox bath, a 20 minute soak should be plenty. Be warned, you will sweat A LOT! Once you’re done, towel off and slip into a fluffy, heavy housecoat. You want to keep your body temperature up to continue the detoxification process. You will likely sweat for a good hour or two after your bath.
